Agave potatorum f. compacta | Compact Tobalá Maguey
€68,90
🌱 Morphology
Dwarf horticultural form with slow growth, selected for its extraordinary symmetry and small size. It forms a compact rosette of approximately 20–30 cm in height and 30–40 cm in diameter, although some specimens may remain even smaller. The leaves are short, thick, ovate-lanceolate, glaucous green to grayish-blue in color, very tightly packed around the center, and frequently feature leaf impressions on their reverse side. The margins have very marked brown or rust-colored teeth, and the terminal spine is robust and chestnut-brown.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It has no natural distribution of its own, as it is a horticultural form selected from Agave potatorum. The species is native to the semi-arid highlands of central and southern Mexico, at approximately 1,200 to 2,250 m altitude, where it grows on stony, well-drained terrain. Agave potatorum exhibits great morphological and size variability.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −6 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Specific references for this compact form are variable, so it is prudent to protect it from prolonged frosts and, especially, from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light and direct sun to maintain a compact and perfectly symmetrical rosette. In summers with very intense sunlight, it may appreciate light protection during the middle of the day. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Growth mainly in spring and summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, water supply is gradually reduced, and it is kept practically dry during winter. Its slow growth makes it advisable to avoid excess water and substrates that retain moisture.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: the rosette blooms only once upon reaching maturity and subsequently dies, although it may produce offsets that perpetuate the clone. Flowering is infrequent in small specimens; if it does occur, the inflorescence can reach approximately 2–3 m. No sufficiently documented age of first flowering has been found for this specific form.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its contribution of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. In agaves, it is not recommended to add a specific flowering fertilizer routinely.
