🌱 Morphology: It is one of the most distinctive Aeoniums: it forms a practically flat, plate-shaped rosette, about 10–40 cm in diameter, made up of numerous densely imbricated green leaves. The leaves are fleshy, cuneate and have long whitish cilia on the margins. The stem is very short and the rosette is practically attached to the surface on which it grows. It is monocarpic: after flowering, the rosette dies.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family: Endemic to northern Tenerife (Canary Islands). It mainly lives on cliffs, escarpments, slopes and damp rock walls, frequently facing north or northwest, from near sea level up to about 800 m. It belongs to the family Crassulaceae.
❄️ Temperature: Approximately USDA 9b–11b. For cultivation in Spain, I recommend keeping it above 5 °C and avoiding frost. In winter, it tolerates low temperatures if the substrate remains very well drained and is not waterlogged.
☀️ Lighting: Approximate target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR DLI during growth. It needs a lot of light, but in Madrid it is advisable to protect it from the most intense direct sun and extreme heat. Its natural habitat is cool and humid, very different from the continental summer.
💧 Growth cycle: Mainly autumn-winter-spring, with reduced activity during summer. During growth, water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. In summer, significantly reduce watering, especially with high temperatures. It is important not to confuse its adaptation to humid environments with tolerance to waterlogging.
🌸 Flowering: An erect floral stem about 10–30 cm emerges from the center of the rosette, ending in a pyramidal inflorescence of yellow flowers, generally between May and August. After fruiting, the rosette that has flowered dies.
🌿 Nutrition: During the active period, Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
