Xerophytic Plants

What are xerophytic plants?

They are those plant species that have different adaptation mechanisms to aridity and drought of the soils in which they live, being able to live and develop favorably even in these very adverse conditions.
One of the best known mechanisms is the accumulation of water in its reserve tissues. This is the phenomenon called "succulence" and it was developed by plants previously known as succulents and currently known as succulents.
The botanical family of cacti belongs to succulent plants. Therefore, All cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti . There are plants of this type in more than 40 different botanical families , some known such as aloes, agaves, etc.
Not all xerophytic plants are succulent either. As we have said before, they may have other adaptation mechanisms to water restrictions such as: systems to reduce evaporation through their epidermis (waxy covers, protected or encrypted stomata, etc.), presence of wools on the leaf cover, etc. .
Many of these xerophytic plants are native of the flora of the Community of Madrid and the south of the peninsula, such as: the olive tree, the oleander, the pomegranate tree and many of the aromatic plants.
