Senecio stapeliiformis E.Phillips 

🌱 Morphology
  A perennial succulent with an extraordinary appearance, featuring erect, fleshy, glaucous green stems reminiscent of some Stapelia species. The stems, about 1–2 cm thick, have four to seven ribs or angles with small teeth at their tips, from which emerge tiny, narrow, pointed leaves that soon dry out, leaving small marks. It grows in clumps via basal shoots and underground rhizomes. It can reach a height of about 20–30 cm and branch with age.

🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
Family Asteraceae, subfamily Asteroideae, tribe Senecioneae.

It is native to South Africa, where it grows in dry, rocky areas, often partially sheltered by surrounding vegetation. Its succulent stems store water, allowing it to survive periods of drought. Although it is commonly marketed as Senecio stapeliiformis, some current botanical classifications accept the name Kleinia stapeliiformis.

It is recommended to keep it above 5°C for safe cultivation. It can tolerate brief drops to near 0°C when the substrate is dry, but it must be protected from frost and persistent cold moisture.

☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and benefits from gradual exposure to direct sunlight, which promotes robust, compact stems. A target DLI PAR of 15–25 mol/m²/day is recommended. In summer, excessive heat in small containers should be monitored, and sudden changes in exposure avoided.

💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Its growth depends on temperature and water availability. During active growth, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. Reduce watering when temperatures are low and avoid waterlogging, especially around the base and rhizomes.

🌸 Flowering
It produces solitary flower heads raised on peduncles that extend beyond the stems, with tubular flowers ranging from scarlet red to orange-red. Flowering usually occurs during the warm months and stands out for its striking contrast with the bluish-green stems.
