Rebutia minuscula K.Schum.
🌱 Morphology
Small, green, globose cactus that reaches approximately 5 cm in diameter and usually produces numerous offsets, eventually forming compact clumps. It features 16–20 low ribs, divided into small, rounded tubercles. The areoles are small and densely covered by about 25–30 fine, white or whitish, silky-looking radial spines. The overall appearance is delicately feathery. It is the type species for the Rebutia genus.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to northwestern Argentina, especially in the province of Tucumán, where it grows in mountain environments and rocky slopes. The type locality is located in Tucumán. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The breadth of the species' morphological variation has historically led to numerous names, now included under R. minuscula in Lodé's 2026 interpretation.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC when dry and in well-acclimated specimens. Moisture in the substrate should be avoided during cold spells.
☀️ Lighting
Requires plenty of light and several hours of direct sun to maintain compact growth and develop dense spination. During active growth, a daily light integral (DLI) of approximately 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ PAR is recommended, with progressive acclimatization to intense radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Keep completely dry during the winter. In spring, resume watering generously but infrequently, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During active growth, it tolerates regular watering provided that drainage is rapid and ventilation is excellent. Gradually reduce water at the end of autumn.
🌸 Flowering
One of its main ornamental features. It produces numerous flowers from the basal area of the stem, forming a true crown around the plant. They are large in relation to the tiny body, approximately 3–4 cm, and can exhibit red, carmine, pink, violet, orange, or yellow shades depending on the variability within the species.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high assimilable calcium content and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
