🌱 Morphology
A Mammillaria that lives up to its name: magnifica. It forms green cylindrical stems that can reach about 40 cm in height and 5–9 cm in diameter, and it can form clusters over time. The tubercles, conical or pyramidal, are covered by a dense armor of spines. The lower central spine, long and hooked, is particularly striking, measuring up to 5.5 cm, accompanied by other shorter, yellowish or light brown central spines, and 18–24 white or yellowish radial spines.
In spring, a crown of pink to pink-purple flowers surrounds the upper part of the stem, creating a spectacular contrast with the spination. The fruits are pink to violet-red.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Mexico, where it is found in the states of Morelos and Puebla, at an altitude of approximately 1,000 to 1,550 m. It is associated with dry vegetation areas and, according to available sources, likely with deciduous forests. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Cacteae tribe.
Taxonomic note: Mammillaria magnifica F.G.Buchenau is the accepted name. Mammillaria magnifica var. minor is considered a heterotypic synonym.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −3.8 ºC. For cultivation in Spain, it is recommended to keep it protected from prolonged frosts and, above all, from cold combined with humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires full sun, with high availability of photosynthetically active radiation (DLI PAR of 20–30 mol/m²/day). Indoors, it should be placed in the brightest location possible. Insufficient light can result in weaker growth and less compact spination.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In autumn, water intake is gradually reduced, and it is kept dry during winter dormancy. It is especially important to avoid excess moisture, as its roots are sensitive to rot.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms mainly between April and June, although under cultivation this can extend into the summer. The flowers, in shades of pink to pink-purple, form a characteristic crown around the apex. It can begin to bloom approximately 3–4 years after sowing, provided it has received enough light and proper cultivation.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, it is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
