🌱 Morphology
  Purple light... A small, slow-growing succulent that develops a compact, generally solitary rosette of approximately 5–8 cm in diameter, although it can increase in size over the years and produce offsets in cultivation.

The leaves are thick, fleshy, and triangular in cross-section, with broad, translucent tips that form large epidermal windows. These windows have an extraordinarily shiny, almost crystalline surface and can take on a slightly bulbous appearance, as if filled with water. The coloration varies from grayish-green to shades of dark green, purple, violet, or purplish-brown, especially when it receives high light or experiences temperature changes.

The internal pattern of the windows combines translucent areas with darker lines and reticulations. This structure allows light to penetrate the photosynthetic tissues located beneath the epidermis, a characteristic adaptation of many Haworthias that grow partially buried.

🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asphodelaceae. 'Tropical Night' is a horticultural hybrid of Haworthia with springbokvlakensis affinity. Its exact parentage is not reliably documented, so it should not be attributed to a specific cross without evidence.

Hybrids related to Haworthia springbokvlakensis were developed primarily in specialized horticulture and are especially prized for their combination of translucent windows, epidermal luster, and dark pigmentation.

As a hybrid cultivar, it does not have its own geographical distribution or natural habitat. Its cultivation characteristics are related to the South African Haworthias from which its lineage derives.

❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC on an occasional basis, provided the specimen is dry and protected from moisture. Sustained low temperatures over prolonged periods should be avoided.

During winter, it is especially important to maintain a very well-draining substrate and prevent the combination of cold and moisture from remaining around the roots.

Indicative DLI PAR: 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.

It requires high but filtered or indirect light, avoiding sudden exposure to intense sun. Sufficient light promotes compact growth and allows for the development of purple tones and the intense transparency of the windows.

Excessively low lighting can cause the rosette to open and the leaves to lose color intensity. Conversely, overly intense solar radiation, especially when accompanied by high temperatures, can cause stress and alter the leaves' coloration.

💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It presents a spring-autumn growth pattern, with a significant slowdown during periods of intense heat. In summer, when temperatures are high, it may enter a dormant phase and significantly reduce water consumption. Specialized Japanese sources classify hybrids of this group as plants that grow mainly during spring and autumn.

During periods of active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In summer, if temperatures are very high and the plant remains inactive, waterings should be spaced out significantly to avoid root problems.

At the beginning of autumn, as temperatures drop, it can gradually resume its activity. During winter, watering should be reduced, especially when temperatures are low.

🌸 Flowering
Flowering occurs via a thin, elongated inflorescence, which can reach approximately 25 cm in length. The flowers are small, tubular, and whitish, with the characteristic greenish or brownish lines typical of Haworthia flowers.

In cultivation, it can flower mainly during spring, although the timing may vary depending on temperature, lighting, and the length of the growth period.

🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During summer dormancy, fertilizing is not recommended.
