Euphorbia fruticosa | Devil's thorn
€15,90
📍 A striking cactiform-looking Euphorbia. Its ribs become covered at the top with very showy yellow flowers. It grows primarily in a columnar form.
🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small colony of green columns that decided to grow into a compact sculpture. Its blue-green stems rise and multiply from the base, while spines align carefully along the ribs, drawing a geometry that recalls an ancient vegetal armor. When it blooms, small yellow spots appear between the spines, transforming this austere architecture into a surprisingly luminous plant for a few days.
It is a succulent Euphorbia, heavily branched from the base and with a cespitose growth habit. The stems are cylindrical, erect or slightly arched, blue-green to grayish-green in color, and can reach approximately 50–70 cm in height and up to about 9 cm in diameter. They feature numerous longitudinal ribs, generally 10–13, with small aligned tubercles. From these emerge the characteristic spines, which are well-developed in the typical form. The leaves are tiny and ephemeral. It produces white latex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is native to southwestern Saudi Arabia and northern Yemen. It grows in arid regions, on rocky slopes and stony ground with very fast drainage. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC in dry conditions, with well-acclimated specimens and during brief episodes. During winter, it must be kept completely dry and protected from prolonged frost.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, intense lighting is recommended, approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun after gradual acclimation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During winter, water intake is significantly reduced and it is kept practically dry when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small bright yellow cyathia, clustered along the ends of the stems. Flowering can occur mainly from autumn to spring, depending on cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents with high assimilable calcium content, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, is recommended, applied once a month when watering.
