Euphorbia aggregata f. variegata | Variegated Euphorbia aggregata

🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small green and cream marble cushion, formed by dozens of tiny columns pressed against each other to create a compact sculpture. Irregular patches of cream, greenish-white, or yellowish appear over the deep green, as if each stem had been painted differently. Among them, the reddish or purplish spikes of the young shoots stand out, adding even more contrast to this curious form.
It maintains the architecture of Euphorbia aggregata: numerous short, erect, and closely packed stems with approximately 7–9 obtuse ribs and short-lived rudimentary leaves. The spikes are modified, persistent sterile floral peduncles, generally solitary, and may be absent in certain areas of the stems. The variegation appears irregularly and can vary considerably between specimens and between different stems of the same plant.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a horticultural selection of Euphorbia aggregata, in the Euphorbiaceae family. The parent species is native to South Africa, especially the Eastern Cape, where it grows in dry, rocky environments in the Karoo. The ‘Variegata’ form has no natural distribution of its own, as it is maintained exclusively through cultivation.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −6 ºC in completely dry, well-acclimatized specimens during brief episodes, although with the variegated form it is better to be cautious and avoid combining intense cold with humidity. In specialized cultivation, it is recommended to protect it from prolonged low temperatures.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, a PAR DLI of 18–25 mol/m²/day is recommended. It needs plenty of light to maintain compact growth and keep a good contrast between the green and variegated areas, but the areas with little or no chlorophyll are more sensitive to intense solar radiation and can suffer burns. Direct exposure should be introduced gradually.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In winter, water intake should be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate dry when temperatures are low. The smaller photosynthetic surface area of the variegated tissues means that water consumption is lower than that of a completely green plant.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small cyathia near the ends of the stems, with greenish-yellow or, occasionally, purple nectar glands. The flowering is discreet and shares the reproductive architecture of the species, whose sterile peduncles can persist afterward as spikes.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer specific to succulents is recommended, with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Suculentas, applied once a month during watering.
