        🌱 Morphology
Slow-growing, rhizomatous, acaulescent succulent plant that forms compact groups of erect leaves. Its habit is especially characteristic due to the vertical and slightly divergent arrangement of the leaves, which is reminiscent of the sticks in the Japanese game that gives the cultivar its name.

The leaves are cylindrical, fleshy, rigid, and narrow, with a marked longitudinal groove and a pointed tip. They exhibit a dark green to grayish-green coloration with lighter, irregular transverse bands. They grow directly from the rhizome and can reach approximately 30–50 cm in length, forming increasingly dense clusters by producing new shoots.

        🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asparagaceae. ‘Mikado’ is a horticultural selection associated with Dracaena bacularis, and therefore does not have a natural distribution of its own.

The reference species comes from tropical Africa, especially from regions of Central Africa, where it grows in warm and seasonally dry environments. Its succulent leaves and rhizome allow it to store water and withstand prolonged periods of drought.

In traditional horticulture, it has been marketed as Sansevieria bacularis ‘Mikado’. The genus Sansevieria has been integrated into Dracaena based on phylogenetic studies, although some horticultural sources still retain the old nomenclature.

        ❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–12b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC occasionally when it remains completely dry and protected from humidity. For safe growth, it is recommended to keep it above 10 ºC.

Cold combined with a moist substrate can cause damage to the roots and rhizome. During winter, it is advisable to keep it protected from low temperatures and reduce watering considerably.

        ☀️ Lighting
        Indicative PAR DLI: 10–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.

It adapts to different lighting levels, from bright shade to direct sun. Abundant lighting encourages more compact growth and better expression of the transverse bands on the leaves.

It can receive mild direct sun after progressive acclimatization. In very low light conditions, it can survive, but growth slows down and the plant may develop a less compact habit.

        💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its activity is concentrated mainly during warm periods and decreases notably when temperatures drop.

During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. The cylindrical leaves and the rhizome act as water storage organs, so it tolerates long periods of drought.

In autumn, waterings should be gradually spaced out, and during winter, the substrate should be kept practically dry. Water should be applied directly to the substrate, avoiding it getting trapped at the base of the leaves.

        🌸 Flowering
Flowering is occasional in cultivation, especially in well-established adult specimens with sufficient lighting. The inflorescence emerges from the base of the plant and can reach a considerable height relative to the cluster of leaves.

The flowers are small, greenish-white in color, with narrow, tubular-looking floral structures, and can emit a perceptible fragrance. Flowering usually occurs during warm periods.

        🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.

This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.

Xerophyte in 12 x 12 cm black pot (Size M).
