Euphorbia frankii | Yemen Euphorbia

🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small colony of green spheres that had decided to gradually turn into a compact cushion. Each stem resembles a tiny column sculpted with deep, perfectly drawn ribs, crossed by fine white lines that run along their crests. It is a small plant, but it has an enormous sculptural presence: a true geometric jewel hidden among the dry mountains of Yemen.
It is a dwarf succulent Euphorbia, slow-growing and strongly cespitose. It typically begins with a globose stem that becomes somewhat more cylindrical with age and produces numerous offsets from the base, eventually forming dense, compact clusters. The stems are deep green to grayish-green and feature deep, angular ribs, generally 5–8, which may be slightly spiraled. Small, narrow, whitish areoles appear on the crests, forming very characteristic longitudinal lines. Spines are very rare and, when they do appear, they are short, rigid, and grayish. It produces white latex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A species endemic to northern Yemen, where it grows in desert environments and dry scrubland. It was described by John Jacob Lavranos in 2005, after having been interpreted for years as a dwarf form of Euphorbia fruticosa. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC only on an occasional basis, under completely dry conditions and with well-acclimated specimens. For cultivation, it is much safer to keep it above 8 ºC during the winter, especially if there is moisture in the substrate.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, intense lighting is recommended, approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It can receive direct sun after progressive acclimation, although it may benefit from some protection during the hours of peak summer radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before watering again. As autumn arrives, water intake is progressively reduced, and it is kept practically dry during the winter, especially if temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small yellow cyathia that appear mainly toward the ends of the stems, contrasting intensely with the plant's green color. Flowering can occur from late winter to spring in cultivation.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, is recommended, applied once a month when watering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technical square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
