Originaria de México, a esta planta se la conoce como cacto arbusto patilón y pertenece a la familia Cactaceae. Tiene excelente tolerancia al calor, necesita sol parcial y soporta temperaturas de 2ºC. Florece entre mayo y julio. En cultivo interior se recomienda su riego entre marzo y octubre. La perlita es un material que requiere una manipulación industrial a pesar de ser de origen volcánico. Es el componente mineral con menor densidad lo que le hace tremendamente ligero. Es el componente más ampliamente utilizado para facilitar la aireación de las mezclas de sustratos. Existen grandes yacimientos de este material en Italia, país cercano de donde proviene la mayoría de lo que se utiliza en España. Su precio asequible, facilidad de manejo y trasporte y el hecho de que químicamente sea prácticamente inerte y de pH neutro, le daría preferencia en las mezclas donde se persigue un elevado porcentaje de elementos minerales, pero sin hacer demasiado pesado el sustrato final. La perlita cuenta con cerca de un 14% de poros intrapartícula cerrados, por lo que su porosidad total* efectiva sería de un 81,4%.
