🌱 Morphology
A slow-growing, stemless, hybrid succulent that proliferates from the base, forming clumps. Young plants have leaves arranged in two rows, while with age the arrangement becomes progressively more rosette-like.
The leaves are fleshy, thick, and relatively wide, V-shaped in cross-section, with a lanceolate-deltoid blade. Their coloring is one of their main attractions: the epidermis is very pale green, grayish-green, or "ice" green, traversed by longitudinal stripes of a more intense green and small clear spots or tubercles. The margins are whitish and the apex is acute.
Unlike other Gasteraloe hybrids with distinctly warty leaves, 'Green Ice' has thick and predominantly smooth leaves, with a texture much closer to some fleshy-leaved Gasteria cultivars. Over time, it can form a clump approximately 30 cm in diameter.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a horticultural hybrid, not a wild species, belonging to the family Asphodelaceae.
The most documented parentage attributes its origin to Gasteria ‘Old Man Silver’ × Gonialoe variegata, formerly named Aloe variegata, and its creation is attributed to David Cumming.
❄️ Temperature / USDA Zone — USDA 10a–11
It can withstand approximately −1 °C for short periods, provided the specimen is dry and protected from persistent humidity.
☀️ Lighting — Indicative DLI PAR: 10–16 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹
It thrives with plenty of light, partial shade, or filtered sun. It can receive a few hours of gentle direct sun, but it is best to avoid the most intense summer sunlight, especially after an abrupt change of location.
As an indicative target during growth, a DLI of 10–16 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ can be maintained. Sufficient lighting helps maintain compactness and intensify the contrast between the ice green areas and the green stripes on the leaves.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It is a species with mainly active growth during spring and autumn, slowing down during the thermal extremes of summer and winter.
Watering should be generous, allowing water to completely pass through the substrate, and then it should be allowed to dry completely before watering again.
During periods of intense heat, watering should be spaced out if the plant reduces its activity. In winter, with low temperatures and less light, the substrate should remain dry for longer periods.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a tall, branched inflorescence, with tubular flowers that have an intermediate appearance between Aloe and Gasteria.
The flowers have a reddish or orange lower part, a white upper part, and greenish central stripes. Flowering is mainly described during spring, although it can vary depending on temperature, light, and the length of the growing season.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with an NPK 3-2-8 (Ca-Mg 8-1) formulation and micronutrients. Root application is done once a month, always adjusting to the plant's activity.
During the preparation of flower buds and flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophytic plant cultivated in Madrid in a square technological pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
