🌱 Morphology
Columnar cactus with a shrubby or tree-like habit, highly branched, which can reach between 2 and 10 m in height. The erect stems have a smooth epidermis ranging from grayish-green to glaucous blue and reach approximately 5.5–11 cm in diameter. It develops 5–19 ribs, generally well-defined and with transverse furrows near the ends of the shoots. The areoles produce translucent spines, initially yellow or golden and later grayish; it can have 1–12 central spines up to 3 cm long and 8–18 radial ones of 0.5–1.5 cm. The areoles in the flowering zones are clearly differentiated from the vegetative ones.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to northeastern Brazil, distributed from Bahia to northern Minas Gerais, and also present in other northeastern states depending on the taxonomic treatment. It inhabits areas between approximately 50 and 1550 m, mainly in the seasonally dry caatinga, rocky fields, and stony areas, on quartzite, sandstone, gneiss, and other rocky or sandy substrates. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC in dry conditions and with well-acclimated specimens. Its seasonal tropical origin makes it advisable to avoid the combination of cold and prolonged humidity.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it needs very high light, with an approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Direct sun encourages compact growth and maintains the characteristic glaucous blue hue of the stems, although specimens grown in low light should be acclimated progressively.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. It mainly grows during the warm and humid season. In spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During the autumn, the water supply is progressively reduced, and in winter, it is kept practically dry, especially at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It flowers for the first time at 20 years old. The flowers appear in the flowering zones near the ends of the stems. They are tubular, approximately 4–7 cm long and 2.2–4.5 cm in diameter. The fruits are globose and depressed, open laterally, and contain magenta pulp. In Madrid, flowering can occur mainly between June and August.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
