š±Ā Morphology
Ā Ā Small globose to ovoid cactus, generally caespitose, which eventually forms compact clusters. The stems are dark green to reddish-green, about 4ā8 cm in diameter, with around 12ā15 low, slightly tuberculate ribs. The areoles produce numerous fine radial spines, spread in all directions with an arachnoid appearance, usually cream, yellowish, reddish, or brown in color. It may present a small dark central spine, sometimes almost black. The combination of dark stems and delicate spination is one of its most attractive features.
š Distribution, habitat and family
Native to Bolivia, mainly from the departments of Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and Tarija, where it grows at approximately 1800 to 2700 m altitude, on rocky slopes, clearings in inter-Andean valleys, and dry shrublands subject to marked seasonal rainfall. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily and Trichocereeae tribe. It has historically been known as Echinopsis arachnacantha and Echinopsis ancistrophora subsp. arachnacantha.
āļø Temperature Ā· USDA Zone 8bā11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to ā9 ĀŗC in dry, well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it must be kept completely dry, especially during prolonged cold spells.
āļø Lighting
It needs very intense lighting to maintain a compact shape and dense spination. It tolerates full sun after gradual acclimatization. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20ā30 molĀ·mā»Ā²Ā·dayā»Ā¹ is recommended.
š§ Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Its growth period mainly coincides with spring and summer, when the summer rains of its habitat provide most of the available water. In cultivation, it is recommended to water abundantly during the active period and let the substrate dry completely between waterings. From autumn on, supplies are gradually reduced until it is kept dry during winter.
šø Flowering
It produces diurnal flowers, relatively large compared to the size of the stem, up to about 5 cm in diameter, supported by narrow floral tubes. There is remarkable chromatic diversity, with yellow, orange, red, magenta, purple flowers or combinations of several colors. This floral variability is one of its greatest attractions for collectors.
šæ Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels such as Desert CHOICEĀ® Cactaceae is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICEĀ® Flowering.
