🌱 Morphology
Cactus with stems ranging from globose to cylindrical, generally solitary when young and capable of forming small clusters with age. The stems, ranging from grayish-green to bluish-green and occasionally with reddish or purplish tones, reach approximately 10–20 cm in height and 7–9 cm in diameter, although they can grow larger. It features 5–11 low, wide, and rounded ribs, which are slightly sinuous. The areoles are small and somewhat woolly. Its most striking feature is its sparse spination: the central spines may be absent or appear in reduced numbers and be very short, while the radial ones may also be missing.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Northern Mexico: Sonora, Sinaloa, southwestern Chihuahua, and Durango, at approximately 200 to 1300 m elevation. It grows in clearings and on rocky slopes of tropical deciduous forests and oak forests, on sandy-loam soils and igneous rocks. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −2 ºC. It is a species that is not very frost-resistant and must be kept completely dry during cold spells. The cultivation sources consulted agree on setting its tolerance at around −2 ºC.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires high lighting, with a target of approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Although it needs good brightness, its delicate epidermis and reduced spination make it advisable to avoid sudden exposure to intense sun, especially in specimens acclimated to shady conditions. It can be grown in soft direct sun or intense filtered light.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During winter, it must be kept completely dry and protected from frost. Growth is concentrated mainly from spring to summer. During this period, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. It requires excellent drainage, as it has a tendency to rot when it remains damp during dormancy.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large, fragrant, bell-shaped or broadly funnel-shaped flowers of an intense bright yellow, which can reach approximately 7–10 cm in length and up to 10 cm in diameter. They appear near the apex and stand out extraordinarily against the practically bare body of the cactus. In Madrid, flowering can be expected mainly between May and July.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
