Echinocereus reichenbachii SB387 | Lace Hedgehog Cactus
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Cactus with cylindrical stems, generally solitary or forming small colonies with age, approximately 10–30 cm tall and 4–10 cm in diameter. It presents 10–19 low and slightly tuberculate ribs, with very close areoles. The radial spines are numerous, fine, and appressed (pectinate), while the central ones can be more robust with shades ranging from white to brown, black, or reddish depending on the population. The spination can cover practically the entire surface of the stem and is highly variable between populations.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Its range extends from southwestern Kansas and Colorado to Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, reaching northeastern Mexico. It grows in prairies, open scrublands, and stony or sandy terrain, from low-lying areas to higher altitudes. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 7a–11b
It is one of the Echinocereus species with the highest cold tolerance. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −18 ºC when kept completely dry and well acclimated, although actual hardiness depends on the origin and the clone. Climate data from its natural range include minimum records below −8 ºC, and there are cultivated specimens with considerably higher resistance.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires very intense lighting, with an approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Direct sun promotes compact growth and allows for the full development of the coloration and density of the spines. In specimens grown under protection, sun exposure should be increased gradually.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Growth is concentrated mainly during spring and summer. In the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. During the winter, it should be kept dry, especially when temperatures are low, to take advantage of its cold resistance without increasing the risk of rot.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large, bell-shaped or broadly funnel-shaped flowers, pink to magenta in color, generally with a lighter throat and numerous petals. Flowering occurs in late spring and early summer; in Madrid, it can be expected mainly between May and June.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
Xerophyte in a 7 x 7 x 6 cm black pot.
Approximate height of the plant: 6 – 7 cm.
