Espostoopsis dybowskii (Rol.-Goss.) Buxb.
🌱 Morphology
A very unique shrubby cactus, 2–4 m tall, which branches mainly from the base. The stems, up to about 8 cm in diameter, have 20–28 low ribs and are practically hidden under a dense covering of white hairs. The areoles have yellowish wool and numerous white hairs; 2–3 yellow central spines, about 2–3 cm long, stand out. The lateral cephalium, up to 60 cm long, is one of its most characteristic features. It differs from Espostoa precisely due to the nature of this hairiness, which does not originate from modified spines.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to Bahia, northeastern Brazil, where it grows on granite, gneiss, and quartzite outcrops in the eastern caatinga vegetation, at an altitude of approximately 300 to 750 m. It belongs to Cactaceae, Cactoideae. Espostoopsis is a monotypic genus: E. dybowskii is its only species.

Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC if kept dry and if specimens are well acclimated. It must be protected from frost and, especially, from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense light and several hours of direct sun, with a target DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹during growth. Good lighting promotes the formation of its characteristic white covering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. In winter, watering is greatly reduced, keeping the substrate dry when temperatures are low. During spring and summer, water abundantly but sparingly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely. Although it comes from a seasonally dry region, it appreciates water during the warm growing season, provided there is excellent drainage.
🌸 Flowering
Blooms upon reaching maturity, but there is not enough reliable information to establish a specific age for the first flowering. The flowers are born exclusively on the cephalium and are nocturnal, fragrant, white with pink tones, and about 5–6 cm long. Several flowers may be produced in succession during the favorable period.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing season, a fertilizer with high assimilable calcium content and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
