🔍 Morphology: Small, creeping, and highly branched succulent that forms clusters of low rosettes. It produces the largest leaves within its genus. The leaves are fleshy, dark olive green to grayish green, tongue-shaped, and have a surface covered in small tubercles that give it a granular texture. Over time, it develops a thickened, tuberous root that acts as a storage organ.
📍 Distribution, habitat, and family: It is native to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, where it grows in arid zones or dry scrubland. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 8a. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −12 ºC when completely dry and growing conditions are suitable. During episodes of intense cold, it is advisable to keep the substrate dry to reduce the risk of damage to the tuberous roots.
☀️ Lighting: It requires intense lighting to maintain compact growth and encourage flowering, with a goal of a DLI PAR higher than 20 moles of photons per day during the growing season. It tolerates direct sun in the cool months, but during the summer, it should be protected from excessive solar radiation and heat.
🌸 Flowering: It produces flowers up to about 3 cm in diameter, yellow in color, with a characteristic longitudinal red line in the center of each petal. In Northern Hemisphere cultivation, it flowers mainly during winter and early spring, usually between January and March. The flowers open during the afternoon hours and close at dusk.
💧 Growth cycle and watering: It is an Aizoaceae with a primarily winter growth cycle. Watering is done during the cool months, when the plant is active and temperatures allow for the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. During the summer, it may enter dormancy or significantly reduce its activity in response to high temperatures; during this period, waterings should be spaced out significantly and excess moisture avoided, especially during heatwaves. As temperatures drop in late summer and early autumn, activity gradually recovers and watering can resume.
🚀 Nutrition: During the active growth period, nutrition with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, avoiding excessive nitrogen intake.
