🌱 Morphology: Succulent hybrid with a bushy and highly branched habit, which can reach 50–80 cm in height. It forms numerous rosettes of approximately 20–30 cm, keeping them along the stems and maintaining a much more compact appearance than A. arboreum ‘Zwartkop’. The leaves are large, fleshy, spatulate, and slightly pubescent, with a velvety texture. The center remains green, while the outer leaves take on maroon, purple, or almost black tones with abundant light.
🌍 Distribution and habitat: It is a horticultural hybrid cultivar, created by American horticulturist Jack Catlin in 1976. It is considered to be the result of a cross between Aeonium canariense × Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’. It has no natural distribution; its parents come from the Canary Islands. It belongs to the family Crassulaceae.
❄️ Hardiness: USDA approximately 9b–11b. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially in pots and with humidity. It can withstand occasional drops close to 0 °C in dry and protected conditions, but it does not tolerate frost well.
☀️ Lighting: Approximate target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI-PAR during growth. Plenty of light promotes its spectacular purple and dark tones; with low light, it becomes greener and loses chromatic intensity. In Madrid, it is advisable to protect it from the strongest sun during the central hours of summer.
💧 Cycle and watering: It grows mainly during autumn, winter, and spring, slowing down or going dormant during summer, especially with high temperatures. During growth, water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In summer, significantly reduce watering and avoid persistent humidity.
🌸 Flowering: Flowering is rare in cultivation and is less documented than its extraordinary foliage. If it blooms, it produces a branched inflorescence with small yellow flowers, following the pattern of its parents.
🌿 Nutrition: During the growing period, Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
