🌱 Morphology: A small, very compact growing Aeonium, which forms numerous cup-shaped rosettes about 3–6 cm in diameter, on thin, smooth stems that branch from the base. The leaves are fleshy, obovate to spatulate, glaucous green, with a translucent margin. During the dry season, the rosettes close tightly, forming a small “urn” that protects the center of the plant.
🌍 Distribution and habitat: It is an endemic species of Tenerife, mainly restricted to the Anaga massif, where it grows on cliffs, walls, and sunny slopes between 300 and 900 m above sea level, in thermomediterranean environments and lower areas of the laurel forest. It belongs to the family Crassulaceae. Greenovia dodrantalis is a widely used historical synonym.
❄️ Hardiness: USDA approximately 9b–11b. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially in pots. It can withstand occasional drops close to 0 °C if it remains completely dry and protected, but we do not recommend exposing it to frost.
☀️ Light: Approximate target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI-PAR during growth. It needs a lot of light, although in Madrid it is advisable to protect it from scorching sun and extreme summer heat.
💧 Cycle and watering: It grows mainly during autumn, winter, and spring, entering a marked dormant phase during the summer. In the dry season, its outer leaves can dry out and enclose the rosette, an extraordinary adaptation to radiation and drought. During growth, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. Drastically reduce water in summer.
🌸 Flowering: Produces a thin floral stem of 12–25 cm, ending in a small inflorescence with bright yellow or golden flowers, exceptionally showy for the size of the plant. Flowering occurs mainly in March and April.
🌿 Nutrition: During the active period, Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
